Neon Moon

The first Thursday night of the school year, YoungLife College heads down to the Grizzly Rose, a line dancing place not too far from Boulder. I try my best to line dance but mostly just laugh and am completely uncoordinated. No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to pick up the rhythm.  After a few hours of attempting to dance, I was walking back from the restroom, the heat of too many bodies in a small space surrounded me, along with the stench of beer and sweat. As I fought my way back to the dance floor, avoiding being stepped on by the many pairs of cowboy boots in the crowd, I heard the familiar tune "Neon Moon" by Brooks & Dunn. This song laced together many of my childhood memories spent with my family, but it also brought me back to a recent event.

To quote my mom, I was "last in line when gastrointestinal parts were handed out". If you've followed my blog for a while, you might remember a few of my tales of a bad gut. A little less than two weeks before school started, I had a procedure done called ERCP, in which an endoscope is put down my esophagus through my stomach and into the duodenum (the beginning of the small intestine). A smaller scope is passed through the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. Since having my gallbladder removed, I was experiencing biliary reflux and was woken up most mornings with nausea only relieved by throwing up. Clearly this was not ideal, so my amazing GI doc scheduled me for an ERCP. Once he was inside, he saw something in my bile duct that was causing some obstruction. He removed that, put a stent in, and cut something called my sphincter of Oddi, that was narrowed. The sphincter of Oddi is where the common bile duct and pancreatic duct intersect, and since my common bile duct was "blocked", bile was not draining down and instead pooling in my stomach, causing the nausea and vomiting. It was no fun. However, with the procedure this a chance of developing pancreatitis simply because of how close the pancreas is to being irritated. Well, my pancreas sure as heck got angry and was rather inflamed. I ended up having to spend five days in the hospital, followed by a few ER visits the next week. It was the worst way to end summer.

The length of my stay, my dad never left my side. He stayed with me each day and each night, doing everything from brushing my hair, helping me to the bathroom, taking me on wheelchair rides outside, never once complaining. We watched the Olympics together, he would eat while I slept, he made sure the nurses came as fast as possible when I needed them. The day after the procedure was particularly horrible and I was so sick. The pain was unbearable and no medication was cutting it. I was beyond nauseated and experienced intense bouts of dry heaving, but also lots of vomiting. Dad sat next to me the whole time, holding my hair, holding my hand, grabbing my sick bags, trying to ease my pain. There wasn't much anyone could do, pancreatitis simply takes time to resolve itself, but my dad's constant presence was healing enough. When I was really missing my pets on Thursday, Dad went down to the gift shop and bought me the softest little cat. He then proceeded to make pretend cat noises in every attempt to make me laugh. Later, he found the therapy dogs and made sure they came to visit me. Friday night, I was incredibly thirsty and wasn't allowed anything by mouth. The nurses said I could have ice chips but only a few. I was starting to crave flavor since I hadn't had any food since Tuesday night. Sneaky ol' dad went to the nutrition room and poured a little cranberry juice over my ice chips. He went out of his way every day to make my worst days better.

Nights were tough for me, and the Benadryl I would take to sleep wore off by 2am and the pain was alive. One night, I woke up to the sound of "Neon Moon" playing, and saw Dad sleeping, squeezed on the tiny, hard couch next to me. Hearing the song made me think of a time we danced to it together at a father/daughter dance, where bagel bites and Oreos were served, 7-year old me got to wear a fancy dress and click-clack shoes, and the whole time I was dancing, I stood on his feet, looking up on him as he led the way. Here I was, a decade later, still needing my dad just as much as when I was little.

This one's for you, Dad. Thanks for being the greatest guy in my life. I love you more than you will ever know!

15th Grade

Late August is upon us and alas, school is back in action. I am in disbelief that I am a college junior and try not to think about it frequently. However, I have a unshakable feeling that this year is going to be the best yet and we are only three days deep.

Let's start with an end of summer recap.

The last part of July, my family took a trip to Disneyland and it was magical in every which way.

I took my Wyldlife gals to camp and had a blast with them, from horseback riding and canoeing to doing the high ropes, jumping in the lake, and dancing to taking on dares and swimming in the pool.

I wound up with a terrible case of pancreatitis after a GI surgery.

I moved into a new apartment with the best roommates ever!!

There was a zebra at church, which is very photoworthy.

Mackenzie and I rocked it as Gloria and Ernie for the YoungLife College manhunt.

YoungLife College went to the Grizzly Rose and all us Longmont Wyldlife leaders went together and were looking mighty fine, if you ask me.

And now classes are in full swing. I am taking human physiology, organic chemistry + lab, an upper division narrative writing class, and abnormal psychology. So far, I love them all, even ochem!! Just give it a week and I will probably be feeling different lol. Coming back to school always brings some reluctance on my part, but now that I'm here, the rhythm is picking up and I am loving it. Maybe this year will finally be the year I get my blogging groove back, but let's not make any promises! Grateful for a great first week and the hope I have for a great year.

Destin, FL

After our time in NOLA, we drove four hours east to Destin, Florida. There, we stayed in the most beautiful beach house. All together, it was my family of five, one of my mom's sisters and her husband and two sons, my mom's brother and his wife and their daughter, and my grandparents. All the adults had their own room and us girl cousins had one bunk room and the boys had another. We were walking distance to the beach, had a pool and basketball court in our backyard, and were close by to lots of neat beaches/state parks.

This vacation was long awaited and a complete blessing for my family. My cousin Ben tragically died in January and then two weeks later, my grandpa suffered from severe complications from a surgery that led to months of tube feeding, therapy, and further surgery. For a brood as close knit as ours, it was just tough so we relished simply being together in a place of peace.

I truly don't have many pics from the trip because I was pretty unplugged. It was so nice to just read my books, play card games and basketball, swim, eat lots of vacation food, and talk with my family.

Of course we stopped and played "Sweet Home Alabama" #cheesefordays

Lots of time spent here
We probably played 50 games of Phase 10. It's our family's favorite card game without a doubt

Why of course I will bury you Dillon!
Parasailing over the Gulf
Personal favorite accidental selfie lol I don't even know how I made this face
They're so cute :')
We got up at 5am one day to catch the beach sunrise. Grammy caught us sneaking out, but joined us for the adventure. It is one of my favorite memories.
VACATION FOOD BABY
Kayaking out on the Gulf. We got to see some dolphins and lots of jellyfish. It was so awesome to be completely surrounded by the blues and greens of the ocean and sky.
Goggles and cousins for life. Love these guys and gals with all my heart.

We certainly enjoyed the slow coastal lifestyle. I cannot wait until we all get to be together again!!

Three Days in Louisiana

Way back in June, we took a trip down to Louisiana before roadtripping to Florida. We visited New Orleans to soak in the culture and experience something very different than our little bubble of a suburb in Colorado.

New Orleans is something crazy. It was hotter than hades and the people there sure are a hoot. We explored the French Quarter, took a swift walk down Bourbon Street, walked along the Mississippi, and were entertained by the hundreds of street performers. My favorite part was the beignets from Cafe du Monde. They exceeded all my hopes and dreams for fried dough coated in powdered sugar.

Absolutely breathtaking views of Lake Pontchartrain at dusk
Apparently red/pink is a favorite shirt color for my family
These days everyone thinks I'm the younger sister :/

Aunt Sue and the boys
What would life be without the endless hours of entertainment from Snapchat filters?
 Day one of exploring...
My cousin Michael is a HUGE Saints fan. Seriously die hard. So the first thing we did Thursday morning was go to watch their training camp. Guys, it was hot and humid and just death. They had paramedics there specifically for the people watching because people get so HOT. Luckily, us non-Saints fans found a patch of shade, had some water, and played Heads Up.

Masquerade mask stores along the French Quarter

Jackson Square
I LOVED the architecture
STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love forcing him to take pictures with me
Beignets and cafe au lait from Cafe du Monde

The next day it was so sticky hot that I barely used the camera. Laziness induced by heat, whoops!

Ending the day with ice cream
I'm not really dying to go back to NOLA anytime soon, but it is a unique place with a ton of history. I highly recommend getting a trolley pass so you can ride around a see a lot of the city, including some gorgeous million dollar homes, Tulane University, the Superdome, etc. In my opinion, a long weekend is the perfect amount of time  spent there. It was a short, sweet, sticky, sweaty few days but lots of fun!

Summer in the South

In June, my family took a little summer vacation down south. We went with my grandparents and two of my mom's siblings and their families. It was a great trip, beginning with 3 days in New Orleans, which was a fun experience and then headed four hours east to Destin, Florida for a week on the Gulf. I made a little video (duh) about our trip and thought I would share it before doing a photo dump, which will be it's own post soon to come!

Happy July!

FoCo with 5ever

Last weekend, 5ever was reunited for the first time in six months as we roadtripped (lol it was 1.5 hour car drive soooo not really a road trip) to Fort Collins! Sierra is up in Fort Collins this summer so we thought it would be fun to see her, explore the town, and be together!

Adding people as we go

We took turns choosing the music, got smoothies, and decided to hike Horsetooth Falls. It was a short hike but completely gorgeous.

my people.
The actual falls were small but pretty much what I expected haha. The water cooled the entire area which was a nice break from the heat.

As we hiked back to the car, it started to rain and we were starving. We had dinner at a great BBQ place called Serious Texas Barbecue where we all had these brisket tacos filled with cheesy potatoes, jalapenos, and onions, that were SO good. Highly recommend it, especially with pickles on the side and lots of BBQ sauce. Dinner was followed by dessert at Walrus Ice Cream. We hung out for a while before hitting the long road home. Sierra and Riley drove separately as Sierra was heading home for a day or two, so Jessica, Mackenzie, and I drove together. Both of my parents went to CSU so as we left, we stopped by to see their sorority and fraternity houses.

We needed some provisions (candy) for the drive. Of course, we got lost and ended up going in a huge circle and it took a solid 30 minutes longer than we thought. But it was all good as shared cherry sours, sour patch watermelons, airhead sour chews, and chewy sweettarts- we have a thing for chewy sour candies. It was such a fun day and SO great to be back with my best friends. I can't wait for more summer adventures together!
