To The Cancer Spectators and Coaches

On this last day of July, I don't only celebrate the last day of the month before school starts, but the life of a woman whom I love so much. Today marks nine years since my dad's mom passed away. My aunt put it best; "She loved summer thunderstorms, baby calves racing, purple anything, wild sweetpeas blooming in the spring, cooking for her family, red lipstick kisses, toodling around the farm with Melvin, dancing with her sons, long visits with her girls, hearing stories again and again, her grandkids, and all of the simple things in life. Eight (she wrote this last year) years ago we said good-bye-for now...today we remember with laughter and smiles, and embrace her sweet memory."

I was only eight when my grandma died, so my memories with her are precious and few. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 60, which had taken her mother and four sisters. She had red hair, like me, more of an orange-carrot color, but I still smile knowing that my hair came from her. She always had chocolate pie made for when we would visit, teach us a little Czech, and make us eat our lima beans. Even though in most of my memories she was sick, you would have never known. Her spirit was incredible and she always was smiling. Her pickles were the best in the world and she hated wearing a wig. I will never forget her love for purple; she was baptized in a purple outfit, wore purple at any family occasion, and was dressed in purple when she was buried. She loved red lipstick and gave us kisses that stained our cheeks. We always peeled potatoes together and would eat half of a raw one after we were done. She chose the most beautiful china dolls for me for Christmas when I was seven. They are so special to me, as they were the last gift she chose for me. In my last memory with her, I had just taken a shower and she asked to brush my hair. I quickly said yes, as I love to have my hair brushed. We sat there in her chair for over an hour, as she brushed my hair and talked to me in a way that only grandmas can. When my parents came home from a trip early, to tell us she had passed away, I was crushed. When we drove the three-hour trip to go to her funeral, I sat in the back under a blanket crying. The funeral was so pretty and I loved seeing the pictures from when she was young. I look just like her. I had never seen my dad cry the way he did at her funeral and it made me so sad. But that's not what Grandma would have wanted. She lived a wonderful life and raised a spectacular family that is adored by many.
I miss her with my whole heart.
Grandma as a baby
Grandpa & Grandma
A year before she died
This year, thinking of her makes me wish I had more time with her, but also realize how much of a gift time is. My sister has hardly any memories of her, which makes me so sad. It also makes me think of a girl at my school who's mom is dying of the same disease. She's one of those girls who is well-known to everyone, and kind to everyone too. I can't even think of losing my mom right now.

Cancer is awful, the worst thing on earth. The day when people, young and old, don't have to suffer through the pain and fear of the disease will be a day I want to be at. There is no worse feeling than watching someone in pain when there is nothing you can do. So this post is dedicated to the cancer warriors among us, but also to those like me. The spectators, who can only watch and pray for this disease to die, and the coaches, who work to help our warriors through research and knowledge. Love to you all.

 Miluji tě navždy babičku.

Enjoying

I don't even know where to begin this blog post because I feel like it's been so long since I've touched this blog. I've been living every moment of life this past week, savoring it all. Most days have started at 7:30am, with me out of the house by 8am and coming home at 10pm. But I wouldn't have it any other way!

There's been...

The joys of summer homework! (but being almost done is great!)
but made better with smoothies, iced coffee, and chatting with Mack while doing it.

Making bank babysitting.
the easiest job to make the most money.

Seeing hilarious movies and almost peeing my pants because of how funny they are.
please, make sure you see The Heat. you won't regret it.

Trying something new.
     like pilates!

Running in the cool morning.
cross country season is coming sooooon!

Soul sister walks.
if only you saw how much fun we were having and the craziness that was going on.

Going technology free for a day.
puzzles and board games are truly the best.

Spending endless hours in my mom's classroom helping her not have a nervous breakdown.
I nominate myself for daughter of the year!

Celebrating CHRISTMAS IN JULY!
I love it so much <3 <3 <3 Christmas music is my new favorite playlist.

Family time on family time.
25 of us in the house, only missing one. Talk about a full house, but a full heart (oh gosh that was sappy)

Senior picture prep.

Up All Night, the Sierra and Hannah Version

Last night was the big One Direction concert, and basically every preteen and teenage girl in suburban Colorado was there. Every teenage girl except for Sierra and I, that is. So while everyone else was screaming their heads off for five guys, we were screaming our heads off singing this song, drinking Icees, chia water, and lots of other much more fun things!

The night began at King Soopers, buying Sierra's favorite food, dry ramen noodles, and chia seeds. Because those two things most definitely go together;) We added some chia seeds to our water to create the most interesting concoction, chia seed water. Chia seeds have tons of health benefits. They are full of protein, iron, calcium, and tons of other minerals. The best part is they're flavorless, but they do have a gel-like texture when added to water. Sierra and I gagged at that for a while.

i thought they looked like tadpole eggs, sierra thought they looked like embryos

We forged on to 7/11 for snacks and slurpees. In my opinion, gas stations are the mecca of teenagehood (like my made up word?). You can get cheap food and cheap slurpees/soda so it's all good. Plus there's always interesting employees who are slightly frightening, but humorous because of how strange they are. (S/O to Patrick at Circle K) We then played the "passenger closes their eyes and has to figure out where we are" game, and Sierra was wonderful at.

For the next hour, we drove like creepers through neighborhoods, trying to figure out how to get from one main road to the other main road on the opposite side of the neighborhood. We were not as successful as we could have hoped for:(

Afterwards, we found a park and went to the playgroud. To be honest, it was scary as heck. There was no lights on and I'm fairly positive that something/someone was in a log on the playground. We sat on the coolest swing thing ever and had our own private One Direction concert. But then we went back to the car because it was creeping me out. The sound of the swings blowing in the wind reminded me too much of The Conjuring so it was time to peace out.

Because food is always good, we went to a fabulous restaurant that serves a global cuisine. It was very classy, and we were the only people there so we were treated like royalty. I must say, pancakes are just divine at 10:30pm. We're so lucky to have such a cultured restaurant that stays open late. ;)

Sierra and I then listened to music in my car for about an hour, and talked about boys, because you might as well when you're 17. We sang and talked a lot, it was just good. I love time with my lovely Sierra <3 We finally left and went home around midnight. It was quite the adventurous night, and we both agreed there's no way any concert could be as fun!

Thanks for a fun night of adventure Sierra! xoxoxoxo

Back to Europe

I completely forgot to post the video I made from our Europe trip. It's a little long, but you get to see some pretty fun stuff, like Mackenzie and I being annoying at the airport;) I'm so happy I made- it was fun, and a great way to condense some of the best moments of the trip into one. One day, I'll go back and add captions but for now, you get to guess;) Enjoy!

Back in the blogging world

Hello world, I am back! Kauai was fantastic and I have some Post Kauai Depression, but that happens. We left last night and took the red eye from Lihue to LA to Denver. I slept and it brought back the memories of Europe. Sleeping in uncomfortable positions is my new thing! We got home around 10, I think? I slept the whole way home. And then took a five hour nap when we got home. Oh, and guess what? I'm still tired. But we went to my mom's classroom for a while, the grocery store (where we literally saw ten people. And we talked to all of them, good lord.)  Now I'm drinking an iced caramel macchiato with three shots of espresso because you know, I thought it would be smart to go see The Conjuring with my friends in a hour. Even though I hate scary movies. Oh this busy life, I just love it!

A Quick Hello from Paradise

Aloha blog readers! I am currently blogging from my ocean front lanai, listening to the waves crash. It's a magical really. Funny how the ocean and all it's unknown gives me so much peace ad serenity. Our trip has been great so far and I've loved every second of it. From the morning runs which are so easy at sea level to the lazy days at the pool and beach or the crazy days exploring the island to the delicious dinners and family laughs every night, Kauai has offered us all a place to relax and center ourselves again. Sending a piece of paradise....

Girls Camp 2k13

S.T.A.N.D.
Stand Tall And Never Despair

OH where to begin?! Girls Camp was AMAZING! It was one of the best times of my life. For those of you who don't know, Girls Camp is a camp put on by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It's for girls who are twelve and up (Young Women), where they can break out of their comfort zone and have a fun time in the wilderness, trying new things. Amanda invited me to go with her back in April and I am SO happy I did. There was instant connection with the girls and women. I had such a wonderful time helping plan the camp and taking part.

The first day, we went to Chatfield Reservoir for a 'beach' day. I was in charge of the Second Years and I taught them first aid. I had two cute girls with very different personalities! Makenna was sweet, soft spoken, and polite. Mikayla was bold, loud, and blunt. The two of them made for a fun time. The whole group of us swam in the gross water, talked and talked, and boated until our bodies hurt. Madi, Jordan, Amanda, and I were the YCLs (youth camp leaders) and we had a grand time helping our girls come up with skits and preparing them for what as to come. We had two hours to quickly rinse off, and then we went to the Stake Center for dinner and skits. Watching what the girls come up with was hilarious! They are all so creative and made us all laugh. The girls split into two groups to spend the night at, and us YCLs went over to Amanda's. We had deep conversation that left us all in goosebumps. We went to have a devotional with our girls and tuck them in. Because Amanda and I both love Mindy Gledhill, we listened to a Mindy song every night with our girls. We went back to Mandy's for more spiritual conversations and watched Pitch Perfect before we called it a night.

The next morning, we met at the church and started our journey to the mountains. We got to a bike trail in Bailey and started off camp with a bike ride. It was no easy ride that's for sure. Let's just say we were supposed to ride 6 miles but only ended up riding 3. It was still a good ride! We had the most delicious chicken salad sandwiches for lunch before continuing on to camp. On the way into camp, the amazing Candi (aka Candida) introduced us to our new favorite song. It's so weird but we were all addicted to it by the time camp was over. Once we got to camp, we set up our tent and decorated that place so it was the cutest place you've ever seen! Afterwards, Amanda and I took some of the girls on a hike to a waterfall that was seriously three minutes away. When we got back, we wrote some letters to girls and had dinner. We relaxed for the rest of the evening and got the girls ready for the high adventure camp we were going to in the morning. But before we could get the girls in their tents for bed, we wen snipe hunting. If you have never been snipe hunting before, then hit me up because I will take you. It is probably the most fun you will ever have! After we found some snipes, the girls got ready for bed and we had a devotional with them. Us YCLs had some spiritual conversation and then went to bed.

On Friday, we set out early for Camp Firewalker, a high adventure camp. There, we did a zipline (nobody broke anything!), a cat walk, the leap of a faith, and a high ropes course. The leap of faith was amazing. It was an old tree that was easily 15 feet tall that had little knobs of the branches left. We climbed to the top and stood on the stump that was only about one foot in diameter.  It gave me such a rush of adrenaline! We had lunch, and then came the high ropes course. I've done high ropes before but this was absolutely the most difficult course I have encountered. I was the first person to go and there were definitely hard parts. But gosh! The rush after I was done! Totally worth it! I was able to help all the other girls navigate the hard parts and it was so fulfilling. By the time we went back to camp, I was literally covered in dirt. We went to the waterfall to wash off in and that was a wonderful feeling! For half an hour, we had quiet time, where we went out in nature and read letters from home and wrote in our journals. I had such revelation during that time, it was truly amazing. Then had testimony meeting. Gosh, words can't even describe how much I loved that. It was so emotional and true. I felt the spirit so strongly and will never be able to get into words the feeling afterwards. After dessert, it started pouring rain. I finally made use of my raincoat I bought for Europe! We had a devotional with our girls and listened to some Mindy to distract from the wild weather. Amanda and I had to run back to our tents, where we had spiritual conversation and stayed up late talking.

The next morning we cleaned up camp and went home. It was such a wonderful few days. I am so grateful to Amanda for inviting me. She is my soul sister and the best friend a girl could ask for. She truly understands me and I understand her. Love that girl.
