The Best Day of the {School} Year

There's one day, and one day only that every single student at my school cannot wait for.

FIELD DAY.

How does one describe field day? It's hard to do. It's an experience like no other. As a freshman, you walk into the gym, where the noise level is deafening. The drum line is playing right outside, and upperclassmen cheer and scream. Faces are painted, blue and green shirts make up blocks in each corner of the gym, and you're so excited and nervous and have no idea how great the next few hours will be.

Then it begins. The freshman and sophomores compete, and the junior and seniors compete. The sophomores have a pretty easy win ahead of them, as the freshman are sooo clueless as to what's about to even go down. The junior/senior competition is fierce as war though.

At the fall pep assembly, the homecoming theme is announced, and each class' field day theme is. This year our theme was Old Hollywood/ Hollywood Blockbusters; the seniors were Star Wars, the juniors were Transformers, the sophomores were Harry Potter, and freshman were Jaws. Students compete in sporty events such as the sack race, tug of war, obstacle course, and ping pong to events such as t-shirt, banner, costume, trash can, song and cheer.  We raise money for charity by collecting cans and doing penny wars. This year was a fight to the death in penny wars, as we were putting in all our money the very last minutes of the war. Us Grizzlies take this all very seriously.

This year, as seniors, my friends and I played up the intensity.  That meant face paint galore and screaming until our voices were gone. I can't even begin to describe the nerves I had. The junior class was going to bring competition and we all knew it. No one ever wants to lose field day as a senior.

It was the fastest, most anxiety-filled day of my life. We went in, my choir sang the anthem, and boom it was there and gone in a flash. Field day is one of those days that the whole school gets amped up about, and each year it gets better. It's one of those days that you want to do again 1000 times over and over. We look forward to it all year, and then it's done. It was a day when all I thought is "Enjoy it. Because it's happening."

In the end it came down to ONE EVENT. Seniors were stressed to the max. We down at 184-185. If we won the last event, boys tug of war, we would narrowly beat the juniors by four points.

And we did it. We won. By four perfect points. Amen.
