Carved in My Heart

Time for a little life catch up...
I have a feeling that sophomore year will be filled with lots of group selfies
The first of my close friends, the ever so lovely Courtney, turned 20 in September! It's so strange that we are leaving our teenage years, years I so anticipated when I a kid. Even though you're technically an adult at 18, 20 feels so much more real and adult like. Six more months of teenagehood left for me! We celebrated 2 decades of Courtney with a delicious dinner and even more delicious cheesecake.

I went home at the end of September for Olivia's sophomore homecoming. I still remember each high school dance like it was yesterday and am so happy that she's enjoying high school as much as I did. I skipped my Friday chem lecture and went home Thursday afternoon, making it back in time to surprise my family at the football game, where Olivia would be performing at halftime. While I was there, I ran into some of my favorite people in the world!
My favorite people tend to be under the age of 8
Friday, Olivia had a very busy day but still managed to look so beautiful on her way to the dance.

It was a really amazing weekend home. I got to relax and spend some quality time with my family, including my grandparents. Sunday, we walked the Race for the Cure, which is always such a humbling experience.

A week ago, on Friday afternoon, Christine, Emma, Mackenzie and I headed south of Boulder to go to see one of our favorite singers, Ben Howard, perform at Red Rocks. Emma’s family recently moved to a house just minutes away from the beautiful amphitheater, so we got to go hang out at her house for a while, where her mom made us the most delicious salmon chowder. We got to play ping pong, pet her adorable dog, and talk about life and the season we’re all in. Ben Howard was incredible live, but I was not impressed with his set list. He chose to play mostly new songs, and NONE of the songs that he is most known for/what made him famous. We still danced, sang to what we could, and enjoyed the time together. After the concert, Christine, Mack, and I went to Christine's friends house for some smores and we all had a great time. We got back into Boulder pretty late, but it was a Friday to remember.

That next day, my parents came up on Saturday since it was technically "Family Weekend" at CU. My siblings were pretty busy the entire weekend, so just my parents came up and we drove an hour north to Estes Park. The fall colors on the trees were fantastic, and we poked around several of the shops on Main Street. The best part was how many Christmas stores there were scattered down the street, filling my Christmas-loving heart to the brim. I love when I get to have only child time with my parents, it's nice not to be interrupted by my non-stop talking sister.

And I'd just like to say again how much fun it is to live with your best friend. We are like two old ladies living together. We grocery shop and switch off making dinners, we go on runs together, we take care of each other when stressed/sick, we finish each others sentences, we watch documentaries together (highly recommend The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst), we borrow each others clothes, we make fun of each other, but still love each other. I pray that my future daughters (and sons!) all find their Mackenzie in life because it is the best.
We are non-romantic soulmates
Sometimes in life there really are bonds formed that can never be broken. Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what. Maybe you will find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding. But there's also the chance that the one person you can count on for a lifetime, the one person who knows you sometimes better than you know yourself is the same person who's been standing beside you all along. -Bride Wars

Sweet, innocent, single. Have at her boys

I'm grateful for each day this year, and for the comfort that this is all familiar. It's so interesting to me how much changes in a year, but how you are always exactly where you need to be. I am loving classes, no matter how challenging they prove to be. I am loving Young Life, and budding leadership and ministry there. I am loving my friends, and our talks and laughs and cries. I am loving now, and each moment. Now is now. I'm taking what is, and carving it on my heart, carrying it with me, knowing that while I don't always know what is next, there will be peace, and it will be ok.

One Week Fresh and Free

I have officially been finished with my freshman year of college for a week now! I cannot believe it. It has been a slow steady start to summer and I have so enjoyed every second of it.

I miss college in a very weird way. It slowly hits me everyday that I am not going back to Smith South Third, and I will never wake up in room 331. It's weird that I won't shower in the rainbow-tiled bathroom and jam out with Christine, or have conversations while brushing my teeth with Emma and Melissa. I sort of miss the monotony of each day, but also am so happy to be free to do whatever I desire! I am so happy to carry so many wonderful memories of these past nine months with me.

On my final night, I went a little crazy. My dinner consisted of french fries and a sprinkle milkshake. I danced back and forth from one side of the room to the other. My friends and I went absolutely nuts dancing and pushing each other on desk chairs in the hallway. It was the best time ever! When things quieted down, we sat in my room and got extremely sentimental, sharing our favorite bits and pieces of freshman year. It was an emotional 24 hours as I packed up the next day and left the place that had transformed into a new branch of home.

I spent a few hours putting this together and crying and missing my friends and feeling so grateful to have captured some of the best moments of the best year.

So now that I'm free of calculus Webassigns and biology lab write-ups and disabilities papers, what am I doing you may ask.

Well...

I have baked a German chocolate cake from scratch,
Happy birthday to the coolest dad around

hosted a Mother's Day brunch,
If this whole doctor thing doesn't work out, I'll be an excellent hostess/housewife/party planner

taken my cat to the vet,

gone to Sonic,
And visited a gallbladder-less Riley!
caught up on Grey's Anatomy,
Huge fan of this cover. Bawled like a baby due to recent events on the show. #AttachedToAShow This cover beautifully fit the episode.

checked out several books from the library,
Loving coffee and the morning sunshine
and have started my nannying job.

Life is sweet and simple. The reality of summer is slowly sinking in and I am so enjoying it.

The Kind of Woman I Want to Be

It seems like all I do these days is think about my future. College will do that to you. I technically am an adult (isn’t that weird??) but I still feel very much like a kid. There have been things that made me feel more adult, like the fact that I am in charge of all my medical decisions, but for the most part I still feel like I am 10. Since I am an adult though, I have to figure out what the heck I’m going to do with this life of mine. I have already done tons, but I feel like the most important things to do still have yet to happen. I am figuring out who I am.

I know that my role here on Earth is to take care of people. I am here to love, support, and help. I know that I am loyal and confident in my own happiness. There is nothing that gives me more satisfaction than helping someone, in small or big ways. My door is always open, my tissues are always stocked, food is at the ready, and the crown is waiting to remind my friends that they are all queens. I like to think that I have a pretty good sense of who I am, but I still am figuring out what I will do with it all.

Social media is the devil in a million different ways. It provokes jealousy. It is where some people place their self worth. It causes major FOMO. There’s a little bit too much reliance on it these days.

But we can’t put it down completely. Instagram is without a doubt my favorite form of social media. I love pictures. I love how so much beauty and emotion can be captured, and then forever preserved. I love that connections can be made. Besides my friends and random celebs, I follow a lot of people who I first followed because I thought they had cute kids (that sounds a lot creepier than it really is, I promise I’m not crazy). Over the years, I feel like I have really become involved in the lives of these women. Not because I was talking with them or really making any personal connection, but simply because I was following life with them. Granted, not all of life is shared in a tiny square photo, but I felt like I was a part of their journey, in a sense.

I look on my Instagram feed. I see Kelle Hampton (@etst), moving mountains for people with disabilities and looking at life with the most realistic yet dreamy view. I see Natalie Holbrook  (@heynataliejean), showing others that honesty and simplicity are life’s two most important tenants. I see Lauren (@aspiringkennedy) exploring London, Paris, and the rest of Western Europe, living out her wanderlust. I see Naomi (@taza), venturing through NYC with young ones by her side, doing what many would deem impossible. I see Laura, as she is finishing up her final year of medical school at Harvard, while having a family. I see Tiffany (@thegraygang) speaking the most honest of truths about motherhood and what it means to be a woman.

But even when I put down my phone, I am surrounded by incredible women everywhere. The inspiration is everflowing.

I see my mother. She is my rock, the most constant thing in my life. She loves so much, is positive and optimistic about every situation, and gives, gives, gives. I look and see the tremendous things she does for not only my family, but the people around her. She has a heart of service, compassion, kindness, and patience, a true example of Colossians 3:12. It is an honor to be her daughter.

My aunts are always there for me, as I text them or call them in times of emergency when my mom’s not around. I am so blessed to have had them be such a huge part of my life. They are my second moms and I'm so lucky to have so many amazing aunts, near and far.

My grammy is me, just 50 years older. This year, she has been a guardian angel, as she has been here in a moment's notice, to take care of me, and remind me how loved I truly am. Then there is my grandma who is truly watching over me, the one who gave me my red hair and enchanting childhood memories.

The woman I babysit for are raising some of the most beautiful, innocent, loving children. They give me a whole new perspective on motherhood. I am honored with every opportunity they give me to let me love on their littles like they are my own. I hope that in one way or another, I will positively impact their lives, like the babysitters I have had. I would have my childhood babysitter, Tasha, come babysit me today, that's how great she was. I love that we still talk and that having a babysitter was always something that I looked forward to/begged for. I hope that I will get to watch these kids grow up, and become incredible teenagers.

The teachers I have had have impacted my life in so many ways. Mrs. Bowen will always be the incredible first grade teacher who made sure I was challenged, but not defeated. I remember sobbing coming off the bus on the last day of school, as I could not imagine going back to school and her not being my teacher. Ms. G was the fun loving redhead who made sure I understood long division, told us stories of Oscar, her orange tabby, and years later, trusted me to watch her beautiful baby girl. Ms. Sclafani was true to the bone and put up with no nonsense, which made a rule follower at me feel so utterly content. Ms. Straw was so fundamental to my love for reading, introducing me to the most amazing books (I still love the Alice series). I remember doing shared reading (song of the week) and belting out the lyrics to compete in volume with the other 6th grade classes. She helped me through the first bits of girl drama, and made my final year in elementary school one of the best. Mrs. Doro and Mrs. Parks were true saints, as middle school math teachers, who could teach the craziest bunch of kids and actually get them to learn something. Mrs. Johnson gave my heart a love for European history, and demonstrated a true desire for her students to succeed, holding AP study sessions everyday after school for weeks. Ms. Wickstrom was vital to my writing successes, as was Mrs. Anastacio and Mrs. Colella. Mrs. Joyner gave me so many laughs, lessons on grammar, and writing prompts to ponder. Mrs. Eloe was more than a calculus teacher, but the best cross country coach ever. Mrs. Kirelis gave me a love for music, and more importantly, singing. There's no way I could ever say I did not receive the best education- not just about the school stuff, but about all the in-between stuff.

My friends moms are my moms. They care for me as much as my mom cares for me. They raised my best friends, the people I love the most, so they obviously have a knack for doing good for the world.

As I think about my future, I think about the dilemma of being a woman who wants to be a doctor AND a mother (a whole other post for a whole other day). The more I think about it, the more I know that I want both, and will not bend. Call me crazy, but I want to have lots of kids and be the best mom in the world, like my mom, and practice medicine, immersing myself in science and my passion for helping others. Society is constantly telling woman otherwise, and that in the field of medicine, you can only pick one. But I believe that woman can do it all. I think that priorities change over time so what the “all” that I think I want now will likely be different in five years. But the reason woman can do it all is because we have each other. These past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time talking, like wayyy more than usual, so basically I have been talking every minute I am awake;) I have had some conversations that left me feeling refreshed and thankful and blessed. The connections made with those I was talking with were something magical, as the universe lined up. One afternoon a few Fridays ago, Emma and I chatted over iced caramel machiattos, about life, hardships, joy, and that the overarching theme in life is people need people. We need each other to talk to, to cry with, laugh with, vent with, celebrate with. Being a woman is about being part of a sisterhood, where we hold each other and in return, are held.

A reason why I have become particularly interested in maternal-fetal medicine is because of the connection their is between women, and our need to build each other up and support each other. I want to be there for them, to take care of them and their babies. Motherhood is a miracle, as I have witnessed time and time again.

So this Mothers Day, I say thank you to all the magnificent women in my life. Thank you for caring for me, for loving me, for giving me an understanding on life, for showing me the kind of woman I want to be- one just like you.

To my Mother

To me, Mother's Day is kind of a funny idea. Every single day of the year, our mothers work so hard to do it all, so why are we only given one day to honor them for all they do? How are we supposed to show them how much we love and appreciate them in just one day?

My mother is one of the most versatile woman in this world. She is a cook, a cleaner, a chauffeur, a nurse, a teacher, and so much more. In any instance, she will drop everything she is doing to come to her children's side. She fights for what is best for us and never stops being a mom for even a second. I know that it is the world's toughest job, but my mom sure does it best.

My mom and I are opposite, yet so similar. She does little things that sure do annoy me, but I know that I do things to annoy her. While we may not always see eye to eye on everything, I know I can also lean on her. Oh man will I miss her next year.

I feel like no one ever truly understands how much their mother loves them until they are a mother. I can try my best to think about how much my mom loves me, but I don't think it's something I'll ever be able to fathom until I have my own children. I'll never forget when my mom would tell me about the day I was born and how suddenly, a piece of her heart was out there, vulnerable to all the troubles of the world. When I was really sick with my reflux my freshman/sophomore year, I remember in times where I was so upset, my mom was upset. She would say that she wished she could just be the one who was sick so that I wouldn't be. I never understood why she would want to feel so awful, but as I grow older and begin to understand the meaning of a mother's love, I know I would feel the same way for my own child.

I hope that one day, I can be half the mom that my mom is. One that serves others, manages chaos, sees the positivity in everything, organizes and schedules, gives guidance, and loves above all else.

Thanks for being my number one fan in life, Mom. I sure am yours.

Giving Thanks 13/30

November 13// I am thankful for having a mom who knows me better than anyone else. There's not enough words in the world to describe how awesome she is. Even when she is the most annoying person in the whole wide world, she still is my rock. I know she annoys me because she cares, and sometimes I forget how wonderful that is. It's going to be so weird without her next year. I know we'll talk on the phone probably everyday, but it won't be the same. From her daily texts with pictures of the cats to our talks every night on my bed, it's hard to picture anything ever being different. I already know she's going to miss me because she told me she's going on anxiety and depression medication when I leave. I can't help that I'm her favorite child;) Brandon and Olivia just aren't as great, I have high standards they'll have to live up to!

One of the things my mom rocks at it giving me little presents when I need them most. Whether it's a Starbucks card, a new scarf, or some nail polish, she goes out of her way to make me feel special. She knows me so well, so it's always exciting to get a little present from her. Last night, she came to my room with this little find from the Target dollar section- some red and white baker's twine. It seems silly, but I absolutely adore baking twine. I use it a million different ways during the holiday season! Plus she knows I'm a Christmas lover extraordinaire, a trait I've inherited from her. The good news is I know these little presents won't end next year; she'll be the queen of care packages!

I love you Mom!

Giving Thanks 5/30

November 5// The first of many red cups. Nothing is more wonderful than a surprise peppermint mocha from my mother. I swear there is something about drinking from a red cup that makes everything all the more special and delicious.

OH MY GOSH GUYS

TOMORROW IS THE DAY. EUROPE 2013 IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN.  THE CAPS LOCK DOESN'T DO JUSTICE TO SHOW I'M EXCITED!!!!

Packing has been going on all week, kinda sorta, but tonight I put everything in! And it's the best feeling ever!

My excitement has been building all day, since I woke up at 7am to take the ACT. Talk about a fun way to do the day before the best trip ever. But it's done, I feel good about it, and now I can completely focus on my trip.

For some pre-Europe partying, I hit up my friend Nicole's grad party (I am going to miss her so much!!) and then a root beer keg party. And I'm exhausted from them. But I came home, packed, screamed in excitement, called a million people to let them know, that me, Hannah, is going to Europe, not some fake Hannah, showered, and I'm now watching The Lizzie McGuire Movie, because why not? (if you get the reference I love you)

So I also got a new camera. So you get some pictures :)
Dear Mom and Dad, thank you for this trip. I am so excited!! love you to the moon and back xoxoxo

#selfiesaturday

Just look at how perfect everything fits<3
my grammy made me muffins for the plane ride. she's pretty cool i guess;)
shellac'd up
gosh i hate my toes

And last but not least, a special shout out to mis padres. I am so lucky to go on such a great trip and have so much to thank them for! My mom surprised me with this new charm on my bracelet. love her.

So I better get some beauty sleep bloggy people. Next time I post will be THE DAY!

Blessed

Happy Easter! Christos Anesti, He has risen indeed!

This past week was a reminder of all the good things in my life that I so often forget when busy and stressed....

Birthday surprises

and celebrations

Watching great movies all day with my mom that leave old songs in our heads

Movie days after sledding

The best pictures from a BF5ever

Exploring downtown Denver

and ending the day with lots of laughter at the Old Spaghetti Factory

Shopping/running errands with my mom all day...and laughing from pure exhaustion trying on pajamas on top of her clothes at Target

Another day just with my momma, my favorite- ending it with Wahoo's

Cleaning my closet and reorganizing all my clothes in OCD fashion

Purple loving little sister

Reading a great book in less than a day (you better believe I've got a lot to say about it too!)

Watching one of the strangest movies ever

Babysitting my favorite littles

Pictures for me from my cousin (btw, she made only me one! and told me I was her favorite! This is monumental!)

I was going to make use of my break and catch up on blogging- I've got a list of things to record. But I just let things roll, and made the best of each day, getting up by 9 and not going to bed until 12 because I was spending time with some of my favorite people. Life is really about enjoying the small things.
