The Utmost Gratitude

via
Yesterday was the last day of my favorite class I have ever taken, anatomy lab. It was a tough course, no doubt, but a class that left me with so much knowledge and appreciation for the human body.

I feel a new sense of accomplishment now that I know every little ridge of each bone in the body, each muscle along with its action and origin/insertion, every organ along with its detailed information, nearly every artery and vein, the major nerves and their pathways, I know so much more than I did just a mere 4 months ago. What are the tassels coming off the large intestine? Epiploic appendages! What separates the cerebrum and cerebellum? Tentorium cerebelli! What's the the smooth part of the patella called? Articular surface! What chamber separates the right atrium and right ventricle? Tricuspid valve! What muscle depresses the eye and moves it laterally? Superior oblique!

Anatomy has always been my favorite thing in the world. I just like knowing the pieces and parts of us, and how it all works together. But there is something I love about anatomy lab over lecture any day.

Cadavers.

"Don't take your organs to heaven with you. Heaven knows we need them here."

You see, I really, really, really love cadavers. While many people are repulsed and uncomfortable around a dead body, I am in my element. The human body is beautiful, miraculous proof of God. Every part works together in the most magnificent, inexplicable way. There is no way you can really learn the blood pathway through the brain without holding a brain in your hands, looking at the Circle of Willis. Tracing the brachial plexus from ventral rami to nerve makes so much more sense when you lift the medial and lateral cords to see the posterior cord. Placing a lung back in the pleural cavity is such a thrill.

Besides a wealth of knowledge, this class left me giving endless thanks to those who chose to donate their body to science. It would be impossible to learn what I must without a real body in front of me. Models are exactly that, models. They display each artery and vein and muscle and nerve in textbook position, with no deviance. But with each cadaver, there is a story. You can see staples from a heart bypass surgery or a cirrhotic liver and wonder about their lifestyle. You see an extra branch on the subclavian artery and think about how they probably went their whole lives without knowing about their extra feature. You see a lack of appendix and gallbladder, and think, was it gallstones or an inflamed appendix or both? You see a small tumor-like ball on a kidney, a result of cancer, and hope that they had friends and family by their side as they fought the beast. You see a Marine Corps tattoo, and then, he is a veteran. You can see a small but visible scar across the uterus of a female from a Cesarean, and she is suddenly a mother. Her fingernails are still painted, red with gold polka dots. Her hands callused from years of work. She is no longer just a body, but a person who had a family, friends, a life. They all are.

But they all also made the decision to be part of something more than themselves. The gave their bodies to science so that people like me, a 19-year old undergrad student, could further their educations and become the doctors, nurses, researchers, and ponderers of the complex and amazing body who will one day, find cures to their many maladies.

I am just about finished with a book, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and I am in complete awe. We need cadavers. Not just for students, but for grafts, for tissue, for safety testing, for decomposition studies, for so much more.

Donating life is the most selfless thing a person could ever do. Imagine dying and having a domino effect of impacts around the world, through others.  Perhaps your organs will be donated to those who were just plain unlucky and have diseases beyond their control. Perhaps you will donate a joint to a professional athlete. Maybe your body will be one doctors practice a revolutionary operation on that ends up saving hundreds upon hundreds of lives. Your body could be what saves several from dying in cars due to a safety issue. Your body could be seen on exhibit and inspire children to go into science, an unending frontier.

The cadavers I worked with this semester aided in my pursuit of medicine. Whether I was holding their hearts or reviewing the muscles of their upper arm, I felt that excitement that every student should feel when doing what they love, along with that peace, knowing I was in the right field of study. As I finished up my last exam yesterday, where structures were tagged and I worked to identify cranial nerves and renal pyramids, I gave silent thanks and prayers to these people, thanking them for their gift to people they never even knew. I thanked them for trusting and believing in the future. I thought of their families and prayed for their peace.

I will never forget these four people. Their gift of life has left me forever indebted. They were my first "patients", of sorts. From them, I learned more than just anatomy. I discovered the rich diversity of life within, and with that diversity, the beauty of how we all work. Life is something to be celebrated. With increased respect and compassion, I am left humbled.

(Another) Grateful Heart

Last year in December, I wrote this post after a particularly tough day. Since yesterday I basically just used this blog to throw myself a pity party, I felt like I should come back and reflect on all the wonderful things in my life because there sure is a lot of them. Good days do outnumber the bad days and even though life is tough, there's still an awful lot of joy.

I am thankful that I am done with chem lab for the semester. Glory glory hallelujah!

I am grateful for Amy Grant Christmas music that always makes me think of my mom.

I am thankful for cadavers. Without them, studying anatomy would be impossible, and far less fascinating.
(Side note: I highly recommend this article and this article to anyone who thinks they DON'T want to donate their body to science. Pretty compelling)

I am grateful for music, and great Spotify playlists.

I am thankful for YoungLife, which always leaves my soul rejuvenated.

I am thankful for group messages with my best friends that leave me laughing out loud in chemistry.

I am grateful for PaperMate pens, my favorite pens to make thousands of notecards with.

I am thankful for hot tea during the evening, and warm coffee in the morning.

I am thankful for pictures and the eternal moments of happiness they capture.

I am grateful for friends that always know exactly what I need.

I am thankful for comfortable sweats that I change into every afternoon when I'm done with class.

I am thankful for the small Christmas tree, illuminating my room. Makes my heart feel a little more at home.

I am thankful for the support I receive every minute of the day from my family.

I am thankful for the therapeutic effect of painting my nails. Not sure why it's so calming to me but it is!

I am grateful for Albanese World's Best gummi peach rings. Forever satisfying my sweet tooth.

I am grateful for hot showers on cold nights.

I am grateful for the calming scent of lavender oil.

I am thankful for the sweet little faces of my nanny kiddos who I love and miss so much.

I am thankful for December, as life speeds up and slows down, and is simply full. Full of joy, stress, family, friends, magic, reflection, just everything!

Happy Thursday evening, friends. Wherever you are, I hope you're taking things slowly, enjoying.

Grateful for the Normal

A normal family moment captured by the outstanding Andrea Smyth (check out her photography here)
Every November since I began blogging, I've done some variation of a giving thanks series. I'm a very reflective person in the first place and constantly think about the multitude of blessings in my life, giving thanks for the big things, like my incredibly supportive family, and the small things, like having a Butterfinger in my room when I'm really craving chocolate. However, I am a sucker for November and the holiday season, so I will gladly play along with the rest of the world and give more notice to the things I am thankful for.

A few months ago, I was reading Love Taza and saw this quote.

normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. let me hold you while i may, for it may not always be so.
― mary jean irion

It really struck a chord with me, and I was quick to copy and paste it so I wouldn't forget it.

Normal days are the ones that we are easily remembered. The rhythms we follow without missing a beat. Normal days are the days we come home to, the faded pictures, the worn-in couch, the cozy clothes, the familiar smells, the comfort that soothes our souls. The days that aren't anything special but are everything special. Where life simply happens, with no piercing punctuations.

When I’m a little homesick (yes, it still occasionally happens), I find myself missing the normal days. The ones where my friends and I would drive around Highlands Ranch during our off periods and fight over the who’s music we got to listen to. The one’s where I spent hours upon hours trying to finish busy work for my classes, and my only break was dinner with my family. I miss weekend errands and hearing my sister practice her dance routines and watching HGTV at night with my parents. It was the simple routines that left me so full.

I guess the normal is what I seem to love so much because I know how quickly it can be taken away. It can be an earth-shattering diagnosis, an unexpected passing, a change in the opposite direction we are headed, moving away from home, or something wonderful, like a hope-restoring treatment, joyful birth, new job offer, or a sparking love. Whether it’s good or bad, life changes and we experience new seasons. We cope, we make do with what’s new, but have to navigate foreign waters, searching for a new normal, mourning the end of chapter while diving into a new chapter.

Normalcy: talking to/bothering Mackenzie when I'm sick of studying
So this month, I hope to dwell more on the things that I love so much but so often take for granted. I hold my breath, knowing that they are a gift and normalcy is not guaranteed. Here's to an extraordinary life, that couldn't happen without the ordinary.

A Best Friend Appreciation Post

While I'm still looking for the love of my life, I know I have found my soul mate.
There tends to be a lot of judgement when people find out Mackenzie and I both go to CU. They think we chose to go here because the other was. They assume we share a room. They assume we are together every second of the day. While the last one is partly true, the rest is not. Mack and I both independently chose to go to CU. We were both highly considering going out of state, to opposites sides of the country. But in the end, our paths continued together to Boulder.

Let me tell you, it has been the biggest blessing to have her here with me. We have been able to grow individually, but always have one another if need be. Our friendship is stronger than ever and we are basically telepathic now. Some of our friends compared us to an old married couple and I couldn't think of a better analogy. She has seen me at my worst, sobbing (in her bed) and cursing the world, and has been there for my best, jumping around, dancing, celebrating, and cherishing the moment with me. She always knows my current favorite song, my favorite sauce to dip everything in, and how I like my coffee. She's seen me melt into a puddle of emotions and doesn't think anything less of me (or at least I hope). She listens to my crazy ideas, daydreams, and hopes for the future. She gives me pep talks when I need them, and will tell me when I need to shut up. She knows things about me before I even do.

She's my person.

I can't imagine this semester without her. How lucky I am to have a best friend who I not only got to experience high school with, but college as well. I cannot and do not want to imagine the day where she won't be a ten-minute bike ride away.

A special thanks for the pre-finals Starbucks and chocolate last night, and doing all of the Christmas party food shopping today.

Thanks for being the best of the best, Mack. Love you to Sonic and back a hundred times.

A Grateful Heart

taken two weeks ago when Boulder was a winter wonderland
Back again, back again, jiggity jig. As of about 9pm last night, I am back in good ol' Boulder after a restful, relaxing week. The break flew by, but it was exactly what I needed. I got to see friends, spend time with family, and be at comfort with the old and familiar. It was beyond difficult coming back. Even though I know I get to go home in 17 days, I just want to be home now. The holiday season is my favorite and I wish I got to spend every minute of it back home. However, I am trying to make the best of this situation. I know that when I do get to go home, the time will be even more special.

Today was a typical Monday after break. Blah with a capital B. I had a hard time going to sleep last night and once I was asleep, I struggled to get comfortable. I overslept and had to hurry getting ready for my 8am. The day sort of dragged along. I decided to go on a run to clear my mind. The run helped to give me some energy, but I think the running in the cold ended up giving me a cold. I got back to my dorm to get busy studying and doing assignments. My computer was acting funky and making it hard to get to my math assignment website. I began to feel frustrated and even more blah than earlier. I spilled my soup at dinner. My printer ran out of paper when I was trying to print important notes. I stepped on a tack and it went straight in my foot. All I could think about was being home. I sat in my room, on the verge of tears, wallowing in my pity.

I hate to complain on my blog. It's not a place where I want to be a whiner. But today sucked. It was just one of those days.

But even when I have these bad days, I am thankful. I think about how the good days outweigh the bad and luckily, the bad days are far and few between. Everyone spends a lot of time in November thinking about what they're thankful for. Well, I'm reflecting on my thanks in December too. Gratitude is not limited to one month a year, so I am carrying it with me as we enter the best month of the year.

I am thankful for family that lives close. It is such a blessing that I have been able to spread my wings and experience college, but also be close to home

I am thankful for friendship. I have so many new friends here at CU that I can tell will be forever friends. I am thankful for old friends. It's wonderful to see everyone on their new journeys, but always knowing they will be there for good times.

I am thankful for coffee, or as I like to call it, the life blood.

I am thankful for a warm bed to sleep in every night, in a safe building.

I am thankful for the joy the holiday season brings.

I am thankful for the education I am receiving at CU and the knowledge I have gained that will hopefully allow me to help the world in the future.

I am thankful for red rainboots.

I am thankful for good books, good music, and good movies.

I am thankful for pen and paper, one of my most favorite mediums.

I am thankful for snowy days.

I am thankful for running trails that lead to the most beautiful of scenery.

I am thankful for cozy blankets and fluffy pillows.

I am thankful for technology. It has allowed me to connect with several people I would not have met otherwise and stay in touch with those beyond my little world of Boulder.

I am thankful for hope.

I am thankful for drives to Sonic, where all of life's problems are solved and singing is loud and off-key.

I am thankful for the future. I am thankful for the peace of knowing what happens is meant to be and the promise that tomorrow is a fresh start.

Happy December everyone. The excitement of Christmas is amongst us! May the gratitude of November stick with us this holiday season.

500 Shades of Thankful

This past Saturday morning, I had a red cup Starbucks date with Mackenzie. While we were sitting there having a lovely conversation, I realized we have these pillars to our friendship. A major one is our exaggerations of emotion/feeling. If Mackenzie asks me how I'm feeling, I would never just say stressed- I am 500 shades of stressed. I am 500 shades of freaking out. I am 500 shades of pissed off. I am 500 shades of crazy happy!

For whatever reason, we just really love "shades of" and usually the number 500. So this year, I decided to carry on the blog tradition in which I reflect on the things I am thankful for, big and small. But this year, it only felt right to call the series "500 Shades of Thankful". In actuality it will be like 20 Shades of Thankful because I'll probably only get around to it that many times, but that doesn't have as nice of a ring to it as 500 Shades of Thankful.

So here's what I'm thankful for today...

The most delicious dark chocolate and binge watching Grey's Anatomy. Man oh man I forgot how much I love Grey's! Seriously my most favorite show ever. This BuzzFeed article further exemplifies my love.

Getting to see the choir today as they came to perform at CU Madrigal Fest. This post goes in depth my true gratitude for choir.

Selfies with the choir because I am your average basic white girl

And with that, seeing Riley's boyfriend. We all love Evan! You got a good one, Ri.

My writing professor is undoubtedly my favorite. At the very end of class on Tuesday, someone jokingly asked if we could have pizza if the library seminar we were scheduled to go to was cancelled. Just read the very last line of the email... she is the best.

So yep, this month will be full of thankful but I don't think it ever hurt anyone to reflect on all that they are grateful in life. Our time here is brief, but full to the brim of things to be so insanely thankful for.

Giving Thanks- Mi Familia

Now how could I ever end Giving Thanks week without mentioning my family?! You know, words can't really describe how much I love them.

 Dad (better known as Dude)...
I can't thank you enough for how hard you work for our family. You have made my life oh so wonderful. I love to run errands with you, your crepes, when you hang up the Christmas lights, when you make me laugh on a bad day, your mashed potatoes, and your love for our family. xoxo

 Mom...
As I have said for years, if you died, I would want to die too. You are the strong glue that holds together our crazy family and you do way more than you should. I love when you bring me late night snacks, send me the daily picture of the cat, talk to me, and support anything I do. xoxo

 Brandon...
Dear lord, you are your father's son- you know EXACTLY what buttons to push. But you are a pretty funny kid. I am proud of your dedication to school (your following in Hannah's large footsteps;)) and your kindness to others. I love you little bro.

Olivia...
You were the best surprise this family could have received. Your personality and spunk make every day funny, and refreshing. You will never know how I excited I was for you to be born- I wanted a sister so badly. You have turned into a beautiful, smart, talented girl
(who is horrible at cleaning the bathroom) but I love you anyways!

I love you guys!

Giving Thanks- Maddison

Why I am thankful for Maddison!
First, let me tell you how I met Maddison. Freshman year, in December, some of my friends who were all in the same English class were going to come over to execute poetry. Mackenzie, just sorta invited Maddison, who I didn't really know. But hey, look now, we're best friends!

Maddison is very good at studying.

Maddison hosts great tie dye parties.

Maddison wears some pretty spandex under her homecoming dress.

She's a super cute birthday girl! Btw, her birthday was YESTERDAY!

She looks cute in massive hats.

Maddison is super strong!

 Maddison is a great driver.

She's a cute pregnant person;)

Maddison looks cute in hats

Maddison goes on walks runs with me!

Maddison wastes time in Ikea with me.

She also drives us around in her dad's Audi!

Maddison enjoys crude humor, like that in "21 Jump Street"

Maddison is a great Rose.

Maddison hangs out at the hospital with me!

Maddison is nice to Olivia.

Maddison looks cute with a moustache.

Maddison Skypes me when we're 3,289.5 miles apart.

Maddison is a great dancer and can PARTY!

Maddison takes her sister to the movies and dinner, with me and Liv.

Maddison is rather cooperative as we guide her around blind.

Maddison runs around the cold, wet ground with no shoes.

Maddison comes to sleep with me in the backyard to supervise Olivia and her friends.

And of course, Maddison is a great friend who always listens, is there for a dance party, will watch any movie with me, can make me laugh, and will hold any secret! One day she'll be my children's teacher, that's for sure:)
We have so much in common and will be forever friends!

I LOVE YOU MADDISON!
AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I am so blessed to have you in my life:)
